Fashion Whip: What To Wear To The White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Fashion Whip is a political style column in the Huffington Post by Lauren A. Rothman, inspired by Lauren’s experience as the founder of  Styleauteur, a style and fashion consulting firm.

WASHINGTON — Saturday night brings us the annual star-studded White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the legendary Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC. This year,Washington’s best red carpet event is getting even better: the red carpet, filled with politicos, media mavens, journalists and Hollywood celebs, is getting the glamorous fashion coverage it deserves by none other than E! Entertainment. The channel plans to live stream fashion and style coverage straight from the event.

So those of us without tickets will be watching E! from the comfort of our couches. But if you did score an invite, what should you wear?

Several popular fashion trends from last year are likely to make a comeback this weekend. The District’s cool springtime temperatures should encourage a few long-sleeved looks — follow in the footsteps of Kate Hudson (in Jenny Packham) or Kerry Washington (in Calvin Klein) and you may win best-dressed. Floral, whimsical looks are always in style during cherry blossom season — First Lady Michelle Obama dazzled the crowd last year in a strapless, watercolor gown by Naeem Khan, as did Leslie Mann in a one-shoulder dress by the same designer.

Your best bet would be to stay on-trend and pop on the red carpet — opt for bright colors to celebrate the season, rather than subdued hues, and play with peek-a-boo styles, one-shoulder cuts and a tasteful slit on the leg.

Whether you plan to pose for the paparazzi or simply stroll the red carpet, greeting fans staked out at the hotel, here are 3 tips to enjoy a stylish evening:

*    Wear a floor-length gown: The WHCD is truly an old-school, black-tie event. Celebs wearing short dresses stick out every year (Alicia Keys, Martha Stewart, Sofia Vergara, Eva Longoria). Only the perpetual party-goers attending pre- and post-event soirées risk a shorter shift. This is Washington’s most formal “Pollywood” event after the inaugural balls. Follow someone famous, basking in their afterglow as you enter the Hilton — people will applaud, so be sure you dress to impress.

*    Leave the cleavage at home: There may be fabulous fashion on the red carpet, but take a cue from the Grammys and keep it just this side of appropriate. Celebs not to copy: Rosario Dawson, who really “opened up” to the country’s political royalty in 2012, and Lindsay Lohan, who revealed some seriously unattractive “sideboob.”

*    Have a car waiting or wear comfortable (yet stylish) shoes: Security screening and long lines can make transportation a challenge — you may have to walk a long way in heels to catch a cab. Some are experts at walking in 6-inch heels; but if you’re not, recall Lena Dunham at the Golden Globes and steer clear. (You don’t want to be remembered forever for your inability to strut the hall in high heels.) Follow the example of D.C. veterans: journalists and party-goers in-the-know always have a pair of ballet flats rolled up in their bag for those long, post-event walks on Embassy Row.

Host Conan O’Brian, dressed in a dapper tuxedo, is sure to make everyone laugh, but all eyes will be on Michelle Obama’s ensemble. Will she be loyal to longtime favorites Jason Wu (worn to inaugural ball), Prabal Gurung, Michael Kors or Naeem Khan (worn at the 2012 Correspondents’ Dinner and to this year’s Oscars) or surprise us with a gown from someone new? Whichever designer she chooses to wear, she is sure to be the center of attention!

Which means you can stop stressing about what you’re wearing and realize the focus is on the celebs. As for the rest of us, we’ll be watching on the live-stream… in sweatpants.

Most eyes will be on the president Monday when he is sworn in at his second inauguration, but standing beside him and the first lady will be their daughters, Malia and Sasha.

“Politically Dressed” went to Saks Fifth Avenue and spoke with political fashion expert Lauren Rothman about what the first daughters may wear to their father’s swearing in.

No matter what they wear, like the adorable bright pink and blue outfits from J. Crew four years ago it will fly off the shelves.

As Amy Carter, Chelsea Clinton, Jenna and Barbara Bush, and other young daughters of presidents have done before, Malia and Sasha are sure to be by their parents’ sides for many of the other inauguration events, but they aren’t the young girls we saw four years ago. They are hitting their teen and tween years now. Malia is 14 and Sasha is 11.

Rothman predicted some “hot trends” for the Obama girls like lace, full skirts, tweed, mixing patterns and even neon (see all the trends by watching “Politically Dressed” above).

“You are always going to see them in that full skirt,” Rothman said. “That flirty skirt is really is one of the first daughters’ signature style statements.”

She added that people may see a coordinated Obama family.

“I think the girls are probably going to have a few options and on the day of [the inauguration] will really decide how the first family is going to coordinate,” Rothman said. “I think everyone will want to know what they are wearing and how they’ll replicate it.”

Rothman added that all these trends are good for your average teen, as well, saying they will keep their moms happy, too.

“The full skirt is great because it really hides a multitude of sins,” Rothman said. “It cinches in a tiny waist and it doesn’t let anybody see what’s underneath. So for kids, it’s safe for mom because mom doesn’t feel it’s too tight. It’s not a miniskirt. But it’s also good for girls who are just starting out, and kind of putting their long legs out there, and want to have a little coverage and don’t want to show off too much of their figure.”

Don’t forget the accessories: a cross-body bag and a fun flat are perfect for their age and, really, any age.

“This is the most important part of all these trends, is you don’t want the girls to grow up too fast,” Rothman said.

The Fashion Whip: Michael Steele On What to Wear At The Convention

Some fashionistas dream about Mercedes Benz Fashion Week – I dream about the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. Who will wear what? Will my “bundle” method of packing suitcases with shirt, tie and accessory combos make it safely to baggage claim? Will the political elite log in to check their online style albums? Many of my clients are moving from C-SPAN to Primetime for the next two weeks and the stakes are higher.

While most politicians are not aiming for a spot on the best-dressed list, there is a uniform for standing at the podium: navy suit, white shirt, red tie (sometimes blue). The conventions are Poliwood’s Sundance Film Festival with lots of meeting, greeting, and speaking; outfits even get better as the week comes to a close. Like walking the red carpet, the RNC and DNC conventions are a time to shine, so don’t re-wear last year’s best threads!

I asked Michael Steele, fashion plate and former Chairman of the Republican National Committee, to share his top three style tips for speakers at this year’s RNC and DNC conventions. Here is what the political analyst for MSNBC and partner at Purple Nation Solutions advises:

• “Wear a suit your mother would be proud to see you dressed in!” Your suit should reflect your style even if you’re not stylish. Add a pocket square and accentuate with a nice tie. Michael says many politicians are partial to the “George Bush baby blue” tie in a solid light blue, calling it one of the prettiest shades of blue connoting softness and strength.

• “Adding a tie pin and cuff links will set off a nice suit perfectly!” Michael says this is definitely an occasion to wear cuff links (even if you’re not a cuff links person). Michael encourages speakers to “frame your words with your cuff links and tie pin” to complete your powerful look.

• “Comfortable underwear and shoes are a necessity.” You will spend at least 12 hours walking around – Michael advises to be comfortable and make sure your clothes “fit in a way that you don’t feel trapped.” Need we say more?

Be sure to add your American flag pin and leave your button cuff shirts at home. And, look out for a stylish Michael Steele – he will be the tall guy in wild colors, striped shirts, and a purple seersucker suit.

WASHINGTON — It’s a tough time to be a political optimist. On TV, the anemic presidential race shifts into second gear, fueled by unlimited corporate cash. In Congress, the perpetual deadlock seems poised to continue indefinitely.

These days, fashion here is equally serious. First Lady Michelle Obama traded in her usual jewel tones and luscious prints last week in favor of a simple one-shouldered black dress at a formal White House Dinner. The next night in New York City, the typically bold first lady again went with a stern color, choosing a navy blue cocktail dress with a high neckline and matching cardigan for a fundraiser hosted by stylish “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker and Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The ensembles were a far cry from the lemongrass inauguration dress and coat that Obama wore on her first day in the White House in 2009, three-and-a-half long years ago.

The somber state of affairs has even made an impression upon the designer of Obama’s now-iconic inauguration dress and coat, Cuban-born Isabel Toledo. “We need an injection of optimism,” Toledo told Fashion Whip in a recent interview. “I loved that color because it was organic and you could almost taste it and smell it. For me, it really represented so much of the optimism of that day and this couple.”

As for what Toledo hoped the newly minted first lady would feel in Toledo’s design, she said, “I wanted her to feel charming, and I wanted her to charm America.”

Not surprisingly, Toledo’s career took a different course after January 20, 2009. “I went from being a best-kept secret to being a household name,” she said. Soon after, Toledo formed partnerships with Target and Payless shoes, which both released Toledo-designed collections. She also penned a memoir, “Roots of Style,” out this month. Her husband, famed fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo, did the illustrations, which appear every couple of pages.

Despite achieving worldwide name recognition overnight, Toledo said her daily life hasn’t changed much since 2009. “I love the process, I love the fabric and the stitching and the design — every step. Clothing for me is very much about the process.” It’s also a highly collaborative project for Toledo’s staff of seamstresses and pattern cutters, a group she said resembles “the United Nations,” but who all work together in her 28th Street studio in Manhattan. There, on the wall behind each seamstress’s chair, hangs a photo of Michelle Obama wearing that particular craftswoman’s creation. “Mrs. Obama wore our clothes for years before she moved to Washington,” Toledo explained “and it’s a great source of pride for us that she still does.”

Toledo’s love for the process of creating clothes, combined with her emphasis on making her entire team feel invested in that process, goes a long way towards explaining her unflappable optimism.

But it might also offer a clue into the malaise currently floating over Washington. Running for national office, unlike designing dresses, is a brutal process. No one in his or her right mind could love it, and most of Washington can’t wait for this cycle to be over.

What the city needs now is a strong dose of Toledo’s lemongrass-green optimism. Unfortunately, neither bipartisan collaboration, nor a more loveable electoral process, are likely to manifest this year.
