Conventional Valley wisdom have been that free is good. In terms of Android, this is the case – free is good! But, once you start to compare it to iPhone, some essential questions come up.

I recently finished a iPhone project with a company out of Sweden, Resolution Interactive. My task was to reshape the business model from traditional PC- online to something fruitful. Coming into to the company early last spring, the finances was well below bad, the team was in dissaray, and the revenues where nill. When iPhone developer program then came available in mid april, we saw the chance and made a jump for it. Although pretty messy to begin with, Apple continued to publish supporting materials, reached out with a network of visionaries and helped us go through the ups and downs of discovering a new market, new business model and new way of marketing.

When we in mid October release the first game – Clusterball Arcade – we received som good reviews and quickly went for title nr. two – AquaMoto Racing. Succesful in my mission, I was able to create a new businessmodel and find a new market for a struggling game company – this with the help of Apple and iPhone.

So, the release of Android from Google, the OVI initiatives from Nokia etc. are all good, but I wonder if they really will be able to provide the multitude of support that Apple was able to provide to me. Also, the unified developer environment (Xcode), the one device, clean business model and pre-existing audience to market too makes it very hard to understand how anyone will be able to compete with Apple on this market segment.

Mark Sigal just posted a excellent article at GigaOm. His analysis below summed this up very clear to me:

“The reality is that openness is just an attribute -– it’s not an outcome, and customers buy outcomes. They want the entire solution and they want it to work predictability. Only a tiny minority actually cares about how or why it works. It’s little wonder, then, that the two device families that have won the hearts, minds and pocketbooks of consumers, developers and service providers alike (i.e., BlackBerry and iPhone) are the most deeply integrated from a hardware, software and service layer perspective.”

Here is a excellent article from BusinessWeek about Appstore from Apple.

I was once an App Store skeptic. When Apple (AAPL) said it would use the iTunes online store to host a range of applications from third-party developers for its iPhone and iPod Touch mobile devices, I doubted that this newcomer to wireless would get things right in the first go. Surely major cellular carriers would block outsiders’ data-hogging features. And would Apple really let indie coders tinker with its vaunted iPhone?

As I write this, I’m eating crow. After trying out Apple’s App Store for the past few weeks, I can say categorically that Apple has hit another home run. The App Store has truly unshackled the high-end cell phone.”

Widespread complaints about the iPhone 3G’s reception have spread across the Internet in the month since Apple and AT&T released the successor to the original iPhone. The companies insist that nothing is wrong, but the complaints have been mounting through e-mails, water-cooler discussions, and message boards on Apple’s own Web site: iPhone 3G users are having trouble connecting, and staying connected, to the 3G networks in their areas.

Online communities have for quite some time been on everyone´s lips. Second Life and it´s creator Linden Labs have shown that a virtual economy can generate cash. Another one that recently reached a major milestone is Habbo Hotel. as they moved beyond 100 million avatars created, it does represent a solid business case.

Stardoll, Age of conan, WoW and other MMORPG communities keep pushing their products out and generate tons of cash. My wonder is if the online devices like iPhone will start make the heavy graphics environment look good enough on the device. As the networks keep expanding its capacities, and devices gets richer – it is only a matter of time before someone makes it happens.

At WWDC yesterday, Steve Jobs confirmed what have been rumored for a while – iPhone will support 3G, and prices will be cut. Starting at $199 for the smaller, 8GB version and $299 for the 16GB, color option version – iPhone is now destined for the broader audience.

With an open application environment and a clean business model – mobile content will now find its true audience through the unified window of iTunes. Offering a 70/30 split to developers, a open SDK and low entry fees for the firmware unlocking the phone – developers will have a chance at actually making money on mobile content.
